The Prince of Gospel Music
Gospel Music Hall of Fame
-- inducted 2002
Daryl Coley is a man for all seasons, a voice for all reasons. Arguably the most talented vocalist of our day, regardless of music, style or taste. His is the unmistakable tenor smooth yet agile, confident but wholly anointed.
Born in the San Francisco Bay area, Daryl
Coley was raised in a home filled with jazz and the music of the
Church. His parents introduced him to such immortal singers as Sarah
Vaughn, Nancy Wilson, Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole. Daryl
remembers, "The Inflections of the great men and women of jazz
sharpened my ears." He studied clarinet and taught himself piano.
In high school, Daryl Coley formed a group much like the fictional players in the 'Fame' series. He recalls, "We did our own music, choreography and everything." After high school, he sang in a variety of bands, yet the revolutionary work in Gospel music undertaken by Edwin Hawkins in the 70's riveted Daryl, and he set his sights on a career in Gospel.
In 1977, he began working with Pastor
Walter Hawkins' Singers. This led to a long association with
Tramaine
Hawkins, for whom he wrote such songs as "I Am Determined." He
also wrote "Return Oh Ye Backslider" for the Love Center Choir
album, "Love Alive II." After developing a great reputation as a musician,
songwriter, and vocalist, Daryl released his 1985 debut album,
"Just Daryl."
His second album, "I'll Be With You" was released in 1988 and went to the top of the Gospel charts in both the U.S. and England. In 1990, he made his Sparrow debut with "He's Right On Time," which earned him a Grammy nomination and several Stellar Awards.
In the secular music field, Daryl's love for Jazz found expression in his work with Rodney Franklin, and a dream come true duet with Nancy Wilson on her "Just The Two Of Us" album.
Daryl has worked with many renowned Gospel stars, including the late great Rev. James Cleveland, the King Baptist Choir with Oliver Wells and Philip Bailey. Daryl Coley is a pastor, a husband and father. He is an artist, but first and foremost a man of God.
Although he is revered by many artists in the music business, with roots in gospel, jazz and disco, his soul is anchored in the Lord. He frequently travels the world conducting workshops, performing and witnessing.
Daryl Coley is aware of his responsibility as an artist and is very careful about his music. He says, "We do have to be careful of some music that's out there. We cannot simply say that 'music is music' because some music is demonic even in its core and structure. We have to make sure that what we do is not only lyrically and musically correct, but that it moves in the realms of God."
