Before even having a record in the stores, the members of the UK-bred neo-soul duo Floetry, singers Marsha Ambrosius and Natalie Stewart, were already songwriting veterans, having penned songs for renowned figures such as Michael Jackson, Glenn Lewis, Bilal, and Jill Scott, among others.
Ambrosius and Stewart first met as members of different London, England-based basketball teams. Mutual friends thought a rivalry would develop between the two, but soon after their initial meeting, a friendship blossomed instead. Basketball eventually took a backseat to music, as the duo discovered a hard-to-ignore chemistry.
Taking the name Floetry (meaning "poetry that flows'), Ambrosius and Stewart relocated from the UK to the USA. Basing themselves in Philadelphia, the duo was soon taken under the wing of the A Touch Of Jazz Productions crew, a group of producers who have worked in the past with artists including Jill Scott, Will Smith, and Lil' Kim. As a result, the duo signed a recording contract with the DreamWorks label, which issued Floetry's debut recording, "Floetic," in 2002.
They describe their music as a fusion of soul and spoken word, or poetic delivery with musical intent.
"We put floeticism into everything we do. We are two opposites on the planet coming together and making something real creative happen," Ambrosius says. "Love songs today seem to be about arguments and breaking up, and the club songs are all about getting one over on someone else," says Stewart. "It's like, come on, I just want to be happy for someone. We don't deny the difficulties in life, but we want to say something positive, too."
