Born, like so many soul singers, to a heavily religious family, Harlem-bred vocalist Kelis (kuh-LEESE) learned jazz following her father in his performances across America as a saxophone playing Pentecostal Minister. By the age of 13, she was already a cover model for teen magazines and in a band of her own, BLU. This launched her into the spotlight, and she landed a gig on the
RZA side project, Gravediggaz.
Kelis left her parents' home at 16, and by the age 18, she had teamed up with production duo, the Neptunes. In mid-1999, Kelis was singing alongside rap troublemaker Ol' Dirty Bastard on his cut "Got Your Money," and her signature technicolor spiraled Afro sparked critics' interests. The Neptunes convinced Virgin records to release her first album, "Kaleidoscope," in December 1999. It was an instant success. She released her second full-length, "Wanderland," in 2001.
2003's "Tasty" followed and yielded the Top Ten hit "Milkshake," another Neptunes production. In 2006, her fourth album, "Kelis Was Here," was released through Jive.
Her brooding vocals blend sensible R&B additives, and the hip-hop layers are funky.
