Gospel Music Hall of Fame
-- inducted 1998
When you hear Contemporary Gospel music today you are listening to a genre of music that was pioneered by The Rance
Allen Group. They were the first traditional gospel group to incorporate soul, jazz, and rock into their music. The Rance Allen Group is considered to be the "harbingers" of the Contemporary Christian movement popularized in the late 1970's by
Andrae Crouch, Amy Grant and The Winans.
Some of their well known hits include, "Miracle Worker" and "Make Me Wanna Dance." Rance Allen was featured on the smash hit "Something About The Name Jesus" from Kirk Franklin's platinum selling "One
Nation" project. The Rance Allen Group consists of Rance Allen and his two brothers Thomas and Steve. Their unique blend has touched the ears and hearts of audiences worldwide, and their distinct sound has not only captured Gospel music lovers, but many R&B consumers as well!
Their popularity has led to performances at the famed Apollo Theatre, The Bobby Jones Gospel Show and The Arsenio Hall Show just to name a few! The Rance Allen Group has truly been anointed by God to sing, teach, and preach the Gospel for more than 30 years. They have been nominated for and have received numerous awards.
Rance Allen has been out front since the ripe old age of 5, singing and preaching, and generally astounding everyone in earshot, from congregation regular to seasoned Gospel artist and everyone in between.
Rance Allen is one man about whom there is no question regarding the priorities of his life. God gave him an incredibly powerful voice which he has always used as a witness for Christ. His dedication to evangelizing has never wavered even though he could have prospered greatly by singing secular lyrics throughout his career.
Rance Allen is considered the pioneer in contemporary gospel music. He began his ministry at Stax Records in 1971 when he and his brothers, who were known as The Rance Allen Group, were the first act to record on the Gospel Truth
label there. He boldly used uplifting, Christian lyrics mixed with current R&B grooves to prove that glorifying God through music was
cool and appropriate when many other gospel artists were trading in their vocal talents that were honed in church to entertain and
profit in the secular recording markets.
Since that time, many famous gospel artists have taken their cue from Rance Allen and chosen to encourage others in Christ by infusing His message into their songs with memorable, moving, rhythm and full-blown soul.
"It's a known fact that nobody wants to follow him on stage," says Marvin Sapp, when asked to comment on the unique vocal and live presence of Rance Allen. "He has the most awesome stage presence. He simply demands the attention of the crowd."
