Boney James, born James Oppenheim on September 1, 1961, is
a renowned American saxophonist, songwriter, and producer, specializing in
contemporary jazz and R&B music. His stage name "Boney" was inspired by his
childhood nickname given by his British boxer father due to his slender physique
resembling that of the character "Boney" in the TV series "Boney" based on
detective novels by Arthur Upfield.
James began his musical journey at a young age, initially playing
clarinet before switching to saxophone in his teenage years. He honed his skills
at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he studied history.
During his time at UCLA, he immersed himself in the vibrant music scene of Los
Angeles, playing with various local bands and artists.
In the late 1980s, Boney James got his big break when he
toured with Morris Day, the former lead singer of The Time. This experience
provided him with valuable exposure and opportunities to collaborate with other
musicians. He subsequently signed with the Warner Bros. label and released his
debut album, "Trust," in 1992. The album received critical acclaim and
laid the foundation for his successful career in contemporary jazz.
