Hot Tuna is an American blues rock band formed in 1969 by former Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen (guitarist/vocals) and Jack Casady (bassist).

The story begins with Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, childhood friends from Washington D.C., who bonded over their love for music. They played together in their teens before Kaukonen's family relocated.

Years later, their paths crossed again in San Francisco's thriving music scene. Kaukonen became a founding member of Jefferson Airplane, a pioneering psychedelic rock band, while Casady joined shortly after.

While Jefferson Airplane dominated the rock scene, Kaukonen and Casady craved a space to explore their acoustic blues and folk roots.

In 1969, Hot Tuna was born as a side project, initially featuring just the two of them and occasional harmonica player Will Scarlet.

Their debut album in 1970 captured a raw, acoustic blues sound.

As Hot Tuna gained popularity, they experimented with electric elements, incorporating violin and drums. This period saw albums like "First Pull Up, Then Pull Down" and "Burgers," showcasing their evolving sound.

Hot Tuna transitioned into a powerful trio with the addition of drummer Sammy Piazza. Albums like "Phosphorescent Rat" reflected a heavier, electric blues rock direction.

Internal tensions led to a hiatus in 1978, with Kaukonen pursuing a solo career. In 1986, Hot Tuna reunited, returning to their acoustic roots.

Since then, they've remained a popular touring act, captivating audiences with their virtuosic musicianship and deep love for blues music.

Despite lineup changes over the years, the core duo of Kaukonen and Casady has remained constant.
