Marc
Anthony (Marco Antonio Muniz) is the number one selling tropical/salsa artist in the world
the salsa phenomenon of his generation on the verge of making a
spectacular musical crossover. Marc's talent has catapulted him onto the
silver screen and the Broadway stage.
He has been described as the quintessential urban
Latino Renaissance man. Marc's cultural sensibility was formed both by
the New York City of his upbringing and the Puerto Rico of his parents'
roots. As a result he has been uniquely able to capture in his music an
emerging Latino-American consciousness in the urban United States.
Marc's
career started when he was a teenager doing back-up vocals for English
language "Freestyle" dance music and penning songs for various
artists. At age 19, he performed at Carnegie Hall and later that same
year at Madison Square Garden, where he opened a tribute concert for
Tito
Puente in celebration of his 100th landmark album.
In 1991, the music industry began to take notice when
his single "Ride On the Rhythm" from the album "When the
Night is Over" reached #1 on the Billboard charts. Two years later
Marc's manager offered him the opportunity to record his first salsa
album, "Otra Nota." His first album was a huge success,
exceeding double platinum. It remains one of the hottest selling albums
in the tropical market in the mainland US and Puerto Rico.
Early in his career Marc Anthony was honored
with Billboard's award for "Best New Artist of the Year,"
"Lo Nuestro" awards, "Ace" awards and a "Diplo"
award in Puerto Rico. His second album, "Todo a Su Tiempo"
released in 1995 has sold more than 800,000 copies. It has surpassed
quadruple platinum and was certified gold in the mainland US and Puerto
Rico. In 1996, Marc was nominated for a Grammy award. He also garnered
Billboard's "Hot Tropical Artist of the Year" award in 1995
and in 1996.
His third salsa album, "Contra La Corriente,"
released in November of 1997, has broken records. It is the first salsa
album in history to debut in Billboard's Top 200 and reach the number
one position on both Hot Latin Tracks and Top Latin 50 at the same time.
As was his second album, it was certified gold in the US and Puerto
Rico. "Contra La Corriente" received "Billboard"
awards for "Male Tropical Album of the Year" and "Hot
Latin Track of the Year" (Y Hubo Alguien) in 1998 and was voted one
of TIME Magazine's "Top Ten Albums of the Year" (1997).
Along with the release of his third album came another
milestone event. In October 1997 Marc Anthony sold out Madison
Square Garden, becoming the only salsa performer to ever sell out the
venue.
Marc's achievements have earned him major media
attention. He has appeared as a featured guest on "The Oprah
Winfrey Show," "Late Night With
David
Letterman," "VH1 Storytellers," "Live with Regis
and Kathie Lee," and "Good Morning America." He was voted
as one of the Ten Most Influential People by New York Magazine and was
also profiled by The New Yorker and VIBE magazines.
In addition to his colossal musical talent, Marc
Anthony has appeared in several major Hollywood films including:
"Hackers," (1995) in which he plays a young secret service
agent; "Big
Night," (1996) where he portrays a shy kitchen
hand; and "The
Substitute," (1996) where his performance as a
young rebel who learns life's lessons the hard way caught the attention
of Hollywood producers and directors.
On Broadway, Marc Anthony melded his two
ambitions into one spectacular role. Alongside the legendary
Ruben
Blades and Puerto Rico's own
Ednita Nazario, Marc starred in
Paul
Simon's "The Capeman." "The Capeman" marked the
first time a Broadway musical with a Latino theme featured a
predominantly Latino cast; it was history in the making. Though the show
had a limited run, critics lauded the artist's performance.
Upon the closing of "The Capeman," Marc
recorded the theme song to "The Mask of
Zorro," alongside
Australian superstar Tina Arena. The Sony Classical song was composed by
James Horner and written by Will Jennings, renown for their
"Titanic" hit, "My Heart Will Go On." He also
appeared with actress
Jennifer
Lopez in a short film/video for his hit
single "No Me Conoces."
In June 1998, Marc Anthony signed a major
recording contract with Columbia records, which allowed him to expand
his musical repertoire into the English language pop/ballad genre.
